Description: This dataset shows the location of waterways in the Wellington Region with the type of waterway being described as the waterway type. The data also includes the names of rivers as per the LINZ Named Rivers dataset, which the data was based off.The dataset was created by first adding rivers in the region, defined by their presence in the LINZ 1:500k topographic rivers dataset, before adding the other waterbodies and applying the appropriate type according to the feat_type field in the Named Rivers dataset (river_cl: stream, drain_cl: drain). Water Races were defined by spatial relationship to the Water Races by Type layer available from AGOL.Tributary field values are take the name of the lowest order feature downstream of the feature. Any waterway that flows out into the sea without encountering a stream name value identify it is a tributary of 'None'. If a waterway's name states that it is a branch of a named waterway (for example the Wainuiomata River East Branch), it is assumed to be part of the same waterway rather than a new one and will keep the same tributary value. Due to the datasets used to build this dataset, it is best used for cartographic or topographic purposes. No guarantees can be made in terms of locational accuracy for the data at scales under 1:50k.
